Summer So Far

Since Christmas I have been saving up some Best Buy gift cards and finally loaded them up on a purchase. I bought a new laptop this summer and decided on the inexpensive, sleek and small Chromebook. It's not for everyone. But, I am sure I will enjoy using this in the living room while watching tv to browse the net.

I just finished reading all of the class survey reflections that you wrote. I must say that I was quite choked up and shedding some tears at the end. I will write up some of the things you guys wrote on my website this summer, anonymous of course. A few of the responses to "words of warning for next year's students" and "book, song or movie title" and "what you'll remember 10 years from now" were priceless!

Thank you all for a wonderful year. It was the hardest year of teaching that I have ever had. But, it was the most fulfilling. Each of you has grown up, matured, and learned so much this year. Having the chance to work with each of you on a daily basis and watching you improve helped me in ways I can't explain. It is that daily inspiration that I am going to miss this summer. The first couple of weeks of summer are going to be hard for me. You may not realize how much I care about each of you and how important you are to me. But, please know that I am always there for you in the future. If there is ever ANYTHING I can do for you... do not hesitate to ask. Please come back and visit me next year. I can't tell you how much that will mean to me.

Have a wonderful summer. For those of you who are traveling to really incredible places, please drop me an email, Facebook message or text message and let me know. I love seeing those cool pictures of fun times during the summer. I won't be doing as much traveling this summer as I would like (other than being taken to neat places by some incredible books - currently reading "Hunger Games"). So seeing each of you having adventures would be great.

Best of luck in your junior year. I truly believe that each and every one of you can succeed in APUSH or Dual Credit if you put the work into it. I believe in you. But, I know those of you who will take level US History will have an amazing experience as well. We have great teachers in History at AHS and I am lucky to be a part of such a wonderful group. You will see what I mean. I have been bragging about you guys all year and that won't stop in the fall. You will make me proud. And I can't wait to hear from those of you who end up with Mrs. Duez your senior year for Economics. She is the very BEST teacher in this school (and I admit it, better looking than me!).

CH. 26: The German and Japanese occupations of neighboring countries led to a brutal war that took millions of lives. Both countries were defeated, but not before the Nazis had killed millions of people in pursuit of Aryan domination of Europe.

• The war caused 20 million civilian deaths.

• The United States, which did not fight the war on its own territory, sent its forces to fight and produced much of the military equipment for the Allies.

• After the war, ideological conflict between the West and the Soviet Union resulted in the Cold War.

Agenda:

1. Hand in the Document Based-Question Essay from Chapter 24/26. Mr. Duez will be working on these to finish in hopes that by Wed/Thu the grades should be in and finalized.

It has been hard to keep up with all the wonderful things that have happened with the MS Awareness Campaign and fund-raising that has gone on this spring at AHS. I am attempting to keep up through this post and link to all the other stories. It has been inspirational to me.

Mr. Duez thanks Ms. O'Brien

I can not tell you and fully express how grateful I am to everyone. So many have given and wished me well, it is overwhelming. The support has really given me the push I have needed to realize that even if I have been given a bad break, there are so many great people in my life.

There is no doubt that I will be coming back to this post and reading all of this during my very bad days. It is this kind of support, friendship and spirit of community that is the best possible medicine I can receive.

This is a very special thank you to the AHS Patriettes, Ms. Rayburn and Ms. Marches and all those special dancing young ladies that Mr. and Mrs. Duez has had in class throughout the years. The spirit of your team is so strong and all of you represent AHS with such incredible grace, talent, and class.

Thank you for donating money to our MS Foundation Campaign this spring. The Patriette Spring Show was inspiring. Thank you as well for inviting Mrs. Duez and I to the Patriette banquet. We were grateful for you to allow us to share in that special night with all of you.

I have been honored to dance at half time during the father-daughter dance as a fill in for two of my very favorite former students. So I guess I have always jokingly considered myself as an 'honorary' Patriette. :) After all of your kindness and love this spring, I really feel like one!

This Thursday @ 8am there is going to be a very fun event at AHS in the pool.

Students vs. Teachers in a series of swimming relays. The tickets are on sale this week and they are asking for a donation of at least $3. The money is going to our MS Awareness campaign.

Thanks to my friends who are competing or organizing. Many of my great friends and former students will be competiting. You are all awesome. Special thanks to Rowan Prothro, John Gillespie, and Sally Wagner for organizing as well.

Learning Targets for WWII:
CH. 24: The peace settlements at the end of World War I combined with severe economic problems to produce widespread discontent across Europe. Democratic rule in many states gave way to fascism, authoritarianism, and the totalitarianism of Stalin and Hitler.
• The peace settlement at the end of World War I left many nations unhappy and border disputes simmering throughout Europe. TheLeague of Nations proved a weak institution.
• Economic problems plagued France, Great Britain, and the German Weimar Republic. When Germany declared that it could not continue to pay reparations, France occupied one German region as a source of reparations. In the US prosperity ended with the economic collapse of 1929 and the Great Depression.
• The new American president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, pursued a policy of active government intervention in the economy that came to be known as the New Deal.
• European democracies crumbled and were replaced by socialism, fascism, and communism.

• Allied forces finally defeated Germany at the Second Battle of the Marne but would not make peace with the German emperor. In the face of upheaval, William II fled Germany. Social Democrats then formed a democratic republic, which signed an armistice with the Allies and crushed a Communist attempt to seize power.
• The Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved into four separate states. U.S. President Woodrow Wilson sought to pave the way for a just and lasting peace by creating the League of Nations and suggested the 14 Points. However, the Treaty of Versailles imposed harsh penalties on Germany.
• The war settlements redrew the map of Europe and dissolved the Ottoman Empire. Ignoring promises made during the war, France and Britain took control of several Arab states (mandates). Despite the principle of self-determination, many Eastern European states included large ethnic minorities, setting the stage for later conflicts.

PHILADELPHIA - The Flyers hit the hat trick of patriotism for their Monday night playoff game: "God Bless America," a tribute to the troops, and almost 20,000 fans chanting "U-S-A!"

Flyers fans heard the usual stirring rendition of "God Bless America," live by Lauren Hart and on video by the late Kate Smith, before Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals vs. the Boston Bruins.

The song has been a rallying anthem for the Flyers since Smith began singing it in the mid 1970s. Hart started the song, then looked up to the big screen and passed it off to Smith before Game 2. They finished in a split-screen duet.

Fans chanted "U-S-A! U-S-A!" after lineups were introduced, and again after the song was finished, a day after Osama bin Laden was killed.

"It's so unique to our team, for any sport," Hart said, "to have something like this."

The Flyers asked that fans pause to salute the men and women of the military who serve the United States at home and abroad. Members of local Philadelphia police and fire departments joined the color guard to present the American flag.

The Flyers and Bruins banged sticks on the ice and applauded early in the first period during a video tribute to police, firefighters and the armed forces set to Lee Greenwood's "Proud to Be An American." The officials also clapped.

Hart, the daughter of longtime former Flyers broadcaster Gene Hart, sings the national anthem before just about every home game and sings "God Bless America" in the playoffs.

"I'm excited to take a small part in what's going to be a really patriotic moment, a really meaningful moment for so many family and fans and servicemen who are going to be here tonight," Hart said.

The Flyers first started playing a recording of Smith's version in 1969, usually before big games. Her first live performance was the home opener of the 1973-74 season.

Smith sang it on May 13, 1975 when the Flyers beat the Islanders in Game 7 of the Cup semifinals, the last year Philadelphia won hockey's most prestigious trophy. She died in 1986.

Smith had a statue dedicated in her honor outside the Flyers' former home, the since-demolished Spectrum. The statue is in storage and the plan is to incorporate it into the entertainment complex being built on the site of the Spectrum.

Twitter User Live Tweeted the attack on Bin Laden's compound in Pakistan

Really interesting how a Twitter user live tweeted the attack in Pakistan on Bin Laden. He didn't know it at first, but the helicopters (Cobras he claimed) that he heard in the distance were actually US Military forces. Really interesting stuff.

I am posting this at 7:50am on Monday May 2nd. So the times listed would have occurred at precisely the time the President mentioned that the attack on the house that Bin Laden was in was happening.

Today before we begin class, the President's address from last night will be shown and a quick discussion about last night's news will be conducted.

President Obama broke the news last night that US Military forces have killed Osama Bin Laden. According to CNN.com:

DNA matching is under way on samples from the body of slain terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden, a U.S. government official told CNN on Monday.
There are photographs of the body with a gunshot wound to the side of the head that shows an individual who is not unrecognizable as bin Laden, the official said.
No decision has yet been made on whether to release the photographs and if so, when and how.
The mastermind of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil was killed by U.S. forces Monday in a mansion in Abbottabad, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, U.S. officials said.
Four others in the compound also were killed. One of them was bin Laden's adult son, and another was a woman being used as a shield by a male combatant, the officials said.
Bin Laden's body was later buried at sea, an official said. Many Muslims adhere to the belief that bodies should be buried within one day.

I'll be posting some pics and reflections from students here throughout the weekend about our trench war simulation. It was a lot of fun, but I believe it was a great way to simulate and experience some of the emotions that the men on the Western Front in WWI may have felt.

Trench War Ammunition. The bucket was about full by the end of the day. :) Recycled, of course.

1. School House Rocks Video for warmup (help to review US History content for TAKS - check this link for all the videos and review information).
2. Social Studies TAKS questions. Mr. Duez will project the practice test that he handed out and students will attempt some of the problems. The class will discuss the toughest questions and will work on strategies.
3. We will watch the 10 minute Trench Warfare Simulation video - see it here on Youtube (but contact me to add you as an account who can see the video if you are interested. I have it marked private.)
Students will use Harry's War Packet during a Socratic Seminar in small groups. Guiding question: "What is the nature of trench warfare?" One person will be the moderator. One person in the group will take notes of the questions that are asked and the discussion topics. We will collect the notes and questions at the end. 15 min discussion. 5 minute debrief at the end.

Agenda for the rest of the week:
Students will meet only once (or twice) during the TAKS week schedule in World History. Mr. Duez will show some of the very best video projects during this week and we'll also do the Ball Toss game.

Atascocita High School steps up for teacher with MS

It started as nausea and unexplained dizziness for Atascocita High School social studies teacher David Duez.

Although he visited several doctors and went through a series of tests, Duez could not get an actual diagnosis until Thanksgiving 2010 when he woke with serious pain and could not walk.

“I was experiencing extreme fatigue which I thought was because of teaching, but it never let up - I knew there was something wrong. It was the Saturday of Thanksgiving - I could not get out of bed and through a round of tests I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis,” Duez said.

Since the diagnosis, Duez has started daily injections to slow the process of degeneration of his central nervous system and decided to share his story with his students and fellow peers at Atascocita High School to bring awareness to MS.

On the heels of one of the largest bike rides from Houston to Austin April 16-17, the MS 150, the school, teachers and students have stepped up with fundraisers for Duez and by raising awareness.

Between designing and selling T-shirts, bracelets, organizing a benefit softball game and other teachers raising money to shave their heads, Atascocita High School stands behind Duez.

The teachers who raised money, including a few female teachers, all gathered April 14 to show their support and shave their heads for Duez.

Mr. Scalia

“I cannot list everything that people have done for me; it is overwhelming. Atascocita High School comes together every year to fundraise for a different cause - I was not too surprised when they approached me about being the beneficiary,” Duez said.

“It means a lot to me. The head shaving event was like an out-of-body experience - it shows me that people at Atascocita High School care and I am part of this community.”

Fellow teacher Mark Scalia was one of the teachers who raised money to shave his head and support one of his good friends.

“Everyone at Atascocita High School is like a family. We watch out for each other and help when they are in need. When Duez was diagnosed, it was something that affected us all so it was a small sacrifice I could make to raise money and shave my head,” Scalia said.

Mrs. Davison raised $1600!

Scalia added that it was great to see females join in the head shaving and since it had been a while since he had received a haircut, he forgot how cold it can be with a shaved head. One of the teachers even raised more than $1,500 to shave her head.

In addition to a foundation set up in his name, there are several local businesses, such as Charming Charlie’s in Atascocita, that have also stepped forward to help Duez and his family with medical bills and other costs through shopping fundraisers.

As for Duez, the doctors said it is early in the MS diagnosis and he will continue to teach at Atascocita High School for as long as he can.

“With all of the support and help I have received from the school, students, teachers and community, I am making sure I pay it back in some way. Since I have slowed down due to MS, you learn to appreciate a lot more things. It means the world to me that everyone has stood behind me,” Duez said.

Video Project Reflections

The video projects this year were incredible. Mr. Duez will be developing a website where we can load these up to Youtube and share them with the world. Please let Mr. Duez know if you would like to have your video considered.

Here are some of the things that students wrote in their reflections:
3rd period:
I am proud of all the projects. Some were really personal and moving, which I found really cool. I thought I was going to hate this project, but I ended up really liking it. Everyone is so creative!

The video project was a fun project to do. The video was very easy to make. It was fun to learn new things to help people understand (our topic).

I loved making a video because I never made one before. (My partner) and I worked great together.

All of these projects were really amazing and well done. They were so informative and each explained their issue in their own ways.

This was my first time making a movie and it was pretty cool to learn something so awesome.

This was my favorite project of the whole year! I learned so much information about things I never knew about before the project. I also had a chance to see how creative my classmates are.

I had to change/redo my video several times, but I liked how it turned out a lot. It was worth the effort.

5th period:
Oh my goodness Mr. Duez, I had loads and loads of fun doing this project (with my partner). This has been a learning experience. I usually don't enjoy working with partners, but I really liked working with her because we were truly equals. This was easily my favorite project of the year. I wish the whole school could see it because it is such an important topic.

I procrastinated like CRAZY. So I was eventually freaking out to get this done. I learned my lesson!

I now have an alternative for projects in the future (I can make a video!).

I had a GREAT time doing this!

What I learned is to communicate better with my partner. That was a major issue for us.

I liked picking my own topic.

Aren't computers great? I loved making my first video ever.

I felt like I should have managed my time much better. It was difficult to get connected with my partner.

I worked alone and I like it that way.

What I learned was that when you care about a subject the end result is so much better. That was obvious when we saw videos that are so important to the people that created them.

This project was so inspirational.

I learned that making a video is really a skill you can develop. My partner and I had the same level of work ethic and OCD when it came to our project.

You can not wait until the last minute!

This was a challenging project, but very informative and fun. I loved having full range over choosing the topic and what we would research and show to the class. I felt that I went in with very little knowledge and came out with a brain overflowing with information.

I really loved this project. It gave us a chance to be creative and do our best work. We had so much fun.

The time allotted gave me the chance to not have to stress over this. THANK YOU MR. DUEZ!

6th period:
I believe we worked really well together in my group. I learned so much.

The project went swell! We both worked so hard on details in the video that many people probably didn't even realize.

We had a lot of fun doing this.

All the projects were great!

This project gave me the chance to learn how to make a video. It also gave me the chance to research a topic that I was always curious about.

I loved my project but had difficulties with Windows Movie Maker. Everyone's personal voice in the video and their passion for the topic made it great.

I learned that we should have slowed down the video to make it easier to read.

I only had one source, due to not reading the rubric carefully enough. But, I loved my project and it was important to me. I would definitely do it again, I liked that we were able to choose a topic that was personal.

This project felt like an interesting way to learn about modern topics and expand our knowledge. Instead of doing homework assignments, the topics we chose hit close to home and were important.

I learned so much more than I thought I would. My partner was awesome.

The video was so much fun to make, but I wish I would have spent more time on it.

I never thought I would just cry in this class, but these projects brought tears to my eyes. They were important to learn about.

This was a great event. Thanks to everyone at AHS who donated money in jars to each of these people (and many others who raised money, but did not get their hair cut).

   Mr. Duez's very favorite April Fool's hoax of all time is Sidd Finch. Sidd Finch was a fictional baseball player, the subject of the notorious article and April Fools' Day hoax "The Curious Case of Sidd Finch" written by George Plimpton and first published in the April 1, 1985 issue of Sports Illustrated.
   Plimpton reported that Hayden "Sidd" (short for Siddhartha) Finch was a rookie baseball pitcher in training with the New York Mets. Finch, who had never played baseball before, was attempting to decide between a sports career and one playing the French horn. What was astonishing about Finch was that he could pitch a fastball at an amazing 168 mph, far above the record of a "mere" 103 mph, with pinpoint accuracy. He also wore only one shoe—a heavy hiker's boot—when pitching.
   Finch grew up in an English orphanage and was adopted by an archaeologist who later died in a plane crash in Nepal. After briefly attending Harvard University, he went to Tibet to learn "yogic mastery of mind-body," which was the source of his pitching prowess.
   The subhead of the article read: "He's a pitcher, part yogi and part recluse. Impressively liberated from our opulent life-style, Sidd's deciding about yoga — and his future in baseball." The first letters of these words spell out "Happy April Fools Day - ah(a) fib" Despite this clue and the obvious absurdity of the article, many people believed Finch actually existed. The magazine printed a much smaller article in the following April 8 issue announcing Finch's retirement. It then announced it was a hoax on April 15.
